Science Ingeneering on a newspaper

Our teacher told us to look for any important newspaper and search if there is any kind of link about science. While looking on The Times (http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/news/) I didn't found any kind of folder like this. But I found it on The New York Times, http://www.nytimes.com/ .

The Science folder is in this link: http://www.nytimes.com/pages/science/index.html

Searching and just regarding all the articles, that most of them are about envirnment and day-to-day issues, I have found this article : http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/16/science/affective-programming-grows-in-effort-to-read-faces.html?_r=0

It is about all the improvements made by computers and how in a relative close future, computers may know how do we feel. This may have also a relation with the topic our teacher taught us, PATERNS, because the Cambridge University is working at this industrial problem, that will be made for any industrial product, mainly for day-to-day issues which are the relatives ones that people may be interested in.

There is also a Technolog folder that is: http://www.nytimes.com/pages/technology/index.html that is more focused in my bachellor, Industrial Electronic and Automatic.

RefWorks

I've just opened a new account in RefWorks, I it very easy, you just have to enter to https://www.refworks.com/refworks2/?r=authentication::init and register.

It is a portal where you can import data base such as books, journals, articles... from archieves of Dialnet, Inspec, Academic search premier, and all the metasearchers from Web of Knowledge. (http://apps.webofknowledge.com)

It is a easy way of recopilate all those texts uploaded on the internet by creating new folders and subfolders, producing as well an administration of bibliographic importance.

The best app is the reference searcher; where you can search in the RefWork database using QuickSearch.

An article in spanish of the main things that you can have in RefWorks: http://www.refworks-cos.com/refworks/international/es/docs/QSG-Spanish-NC.pdf

And also a tutorial of learning to use RefWorks on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLC1C8A11EB1895C3B

Exercise 1

1)Source: we have two options. A) Simple search in Google.com. B) Advanced Search in Google.com/advanced_search
Strategy of searching: Google>Advanced Search
The first thing we wrote was the Title of the search: "Handbook of Java".
The second step was the Language: "French"
And finally we looked for the Filetype: "PDF"
After that, one of the options was our document.
Date of document: 22 of October 2002
Answer:  http://www.esiee.fr/~bureaud/Unites/Old/In413/java_III.pdf

2)Source: we have three options: A) Simple Search in Google.com B) Simple search in Google.com/images C) Advanced Search in Google.com/advanced_search
Strategy of search: we used two of the options. The first one, we looked for "computer journal japan" in images, so we obtained two names of journals. Then, for searching the web page of those journals we used "Simple Search in Google" using the names we had seen in the first step.
Answer:
 https://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/cicsj/30/3/30_40/_pdf
http://www.japaninc.com/cpj/back.html

3) Source:  we have two options. A) Simple search in Google.com. B) Advanced Search in Google.com/advanced_search
Strategy of searching: we search in Simple search in Google.com " Anibal Figueiras 2011 publications" and we found this page, where we obtained some of the details.
http://www.informatik.uni-trier.de/~ley/db/indices/a-tree/f/Figueiras=Vidal:An=iacute=bal_R=.html
Issue: 7 volume: 19 Title: Adaptive Combination of Volterra Kernels and Its Application to Nonlinear Acoustic Echo Cancellation
Date: January 2011

4) Source and strategy of search: we could have look for the picture in a simple google search but instead of that we found that picture ( and also some information) in Google Images. We just looked for “ LEP by CERN” and there were many pictures of that, so we chose one.

5) Source: Google Images
- Strategy of search: we directly looked for “atom icon” and we found a lot of pictures. It was a pretty esay search.

Today has been our first class of Information Skill. We have learn the difference between:

Data, Information & Knowledge.

Data = symbols. These symbols are without meaning. An example of this are the symbol of a number or a letter.

The Database is a group of symbols. An example is OPAC.

Information is when a symbol is compose of meaning. You get the meaning when you get a relation between symbols.

Knowledge is when you put in relationship all kind of information you have. Also is the selection of information you achieve from the research at a searching engine.

To sum up all this definitions, begining on data, once you have a relation with its meaning, you get some kind of information and when you put all them together you get knowledge.
