The National Library is the library institution of the State and head of the Spanish Library System. As a national library is the center responsible for the identification, preservation, conservation and promotion of Spanish documentary heritage and aims to be a center of reference for the investigation of Hispanic culture. Its main functions are:

Gather, catalog and conserve bibliographic produced in any language Spanish or another language, serving the research, culture and information.
Promote research through study, loan and reproduction of its bibliographic.
Disseminate information about Spanish literature production from receipts from legal deposit.
